Adults of any ages who neglect treatment for gum disease may be putting their cognitive functioning at risk , suggests a study in Psychosomatic Medicine . Researchers analyzed data on more than 7,600 men and women ranging in the age from 20 to 70 and older to study the relationship between mental function and gingivitis – a condition characterized by swollen , bleeding gums . The study Subjects had participated in large US health and nutrition survey and taken mental function tests .

The investigation found a significant association between poor oral health bleeding , loss of attachment of teeth to bone , and tooth and lower performance on cognitive tests . The association – which was not influenced by ages – might be linked to systematic inflammation caused by periodontal disease , or to nutritional deficiencies caused by changes in diet related to poor oral health .
